The auto industry used to be the bellwether for the American economy and by default Canada as well. As one schmendrick put it “In Windsor ( across the river in Canada from Detroit) everything goes back to the auto industry. If you work in a restaurant as a waitress you may be serving Ford employees or their families. Or it might be a dentist or their dental hygienist who just got paid , thanks to Ford Motor Companies generous dental and health care benefits plan. This of course occludes the coming “Obamacare“ debacle. Hence as the auto industry is the golden goose why push it ?
Hence its interesting to note the reports that “82% Canadian Ford Workers Ratified New Labour Deal“. Yet what is the deal ? Or its components. You can bet that the auto workers union will demand the same terms for their workers at the other 2 of the “Big Three” – Ford & Chrysler. A real show like the Oscars that will be for sure. Lights cameras, action its “show time“.
In the end it all comes around both in the economy in general which is good , yet also in costs to the auto consumer . While the car, SUV or truck buyer , scheduling a test driver, may not feel the pain in one shot if they financed their vehicle and are shielded somewhat from “sticker shock”. Yet it can be said overall and in summary that “there is no such thing as a free lunch “ and “nothing is for nothing”. On top of that while Nancy Pelosi aka “stretch“ may state the whole answer is “Jobs Jobs Jobs” , most of the new jobs in the auto industry are for robots not human beings. True the makers of the robots have a job, pay taxes and are consumers is true , the same may not be so for more and additional hires by the HR departments for more & additional workers on the factory floors and auto assembly lines. Or as one highly experienced auto dealer pointed out -”I knew that the North American auto industry was in big trouble when the auto workers on the assembly lines began to demand the same pay and wages as if they were doctors”.
Yes it was not that long ago when a good solid made in “America” car cost $ 3,000 and they were made of metal not plastic. And yet it may well be high tech materials in cars and the new energy finds in the US and the “Alberta “Tar Sands” that save the auto industry and industries. Get in your car or truck and drive .
