To a large degree the big three domestic North American auto producers and makers have become not so much car makers but truck producers. Add in large trucks with options - Sports Utility SUV vehicles. Competition in this field is avid. Its not only volume and sales volume that these large vehicles produce its the major share of profits and bottom lines that they create. Its not only shareholders that have to be placated but also funds for R & D research and development.
With the Ford F-150 as the largest selling vehicle in the domestic North American auto marketplace its the obvious target in a large and growing market. Note in most cases marketers and marketing experts focus not so much on the size of the mass – but its growth as well. A rising star pulls along others so to speak. Or explained another way inertia.
GM – that is General Motors -has targeted the sector with an advanced product that deals with issues of the Ford product especially in the Winnipeg Canadian marketplace . High technology with a 6 speed automatic transmission with 2 overdrive gears. Add in an optional 6.2 liter engine and its the best of all worlds - high gas mileage mpg ratings with the ability to tow large trailers within legal load and towing limits. Add in creature comforts and a well thought out functional set of dashboard controls and GM believes it has a winner with in upcoming 2014 Chevrolet Silverado & matching sister line GMC Sierra trucks. Its no Simpson workup here. Years ago people would walk into their car lot and would almost be chased away if they asked technical questions about automobiles lines and models handled and how they differed from the “competition” . This a a Pontiac – a fine General Motors product they would be told and that is a Mercury or Lincoln product . Whats the matter with you – don’t you comprehend that would be the tone of voice. Not today in 2013 when most potential buyers on site know a lot more than most of the sales agents.
As they say time and sales will tell. Consumers are generally quite conservative about the vehicles they drive and own. They don’t leave a line easily. A reputation of trust and reliability is hard earned and harder to leave even if tempting. Yet as experienced & respected Manitoba community auto dealers will tell you the sales not finished until the tires are on the pavement and the vehicle drives down the street away from the new or used car dealership.
